The rabbi said he thought that some rabbis might not have wanted to join the CCS because they questioned whether emotional health counts as threatening the life of the mother. He added that as a Conservative Jew, “I’m bound by Jewish law, as I interpret it.” Indeed, most of the Jewish clergy members of the CCS were Reform rabbis; few were Conservative, and we found the names of no Orthodox rabbis.43

Of the 1,068 clergy members of CCS whose names we found, only 61 were rabbis. The small number of Jewish clergy participants was a sore point for national CCS administrator Arlene Carmen. In a 1976 interview, historian and women’s rights activist Ellen Chesler asked Carmen about this. She said,
